We had a busy week in Cheyenne. Earlier in the week we visited our friends Joyce and Larry. We met them several years ago at our "winter" RV resort in Lakehills, TX. It is a wonderful campground called Lake Medina RV Resort. It is also a real working ranch and most of the same "Winter Texans" as they call us folks, go there every winter. It is like one big family. Unfortunately I did not have my camera with me, but we sure had a wonderful visit. They both competed in rodeo's in their younger days. Larry also had a longhorn steer that he rode in parades.
We had wonderful meals at our friend's Don and Doris's home. They use to live not 3 miles away from our farm in Maryland. They moved to Cheyenne 14 years ago and we met them at an annual Cowboy Shooting Match in Cheyenne. Don saw our address on the registration form that we lived in Frederick, MD. So a friendship formed and we have visited them several times.
Doris is a great cook and she makes one of my all time favorite meals. Frogmore Stew! She introduced me to this delicious meal years ago and when we come to visit she always makes it for us. It's made in one pot and at different cooking times all of this is added: shrimp, smoked sausage, corn on the cob, mussels, potatoes, scallops, old bay seasoning and water. You drain it and dump it on one big serving platter and dig in! It is out of this world!
One morning we went to a well known restaurant called "The Luxury Diner". Every time we come through Cheyenne, this is a must stop for us! It is a converted caboose that has been added on to. It is a popular place with the locals. Awesome food, lots of it and breakfast is served all day.
On the way home, we stopped at "The Wrangler" a huge western wear store and "Wyoming Home" a very nice western home furnishing store. Over the years I have bought several items that added a nice touch to our rolling ranch house. I found a fancy western cabinet handle. We are slowly changing our cabinet handles to western and Native American themed handles and they are all different.
We took lunch over to "Auntie" Barbara's home. She and her late husband Ron knew my folks since the late 1950's. Her husband and my father were D.C. Policemen together. Over the years we got to know her dear friend Char. Char always sends us a beautiful calendar each year that has the most wonderful pictures of Wyoming in it. It adds a nice touch to our home. We ate, laughed and carried on with Auntie Barbara's stories. She could write a book on her life. Auntie B is in the red shirt and Char in blue.
On Tuesday, Oct. 7, we left Cheyenne and headed towards Nebraska. On the way we stopped in Sydney, Nebraska at Cabela's. Cabela's is the World's Foremost Outfitter of fishing, hunting, camping and outdoor gear. It is like a museum inside. Most have a huge floor to ceiling aquarium, a trout pond and hundreds of mounted animals on display. There are about 60 stores in the U.S. and Canada. Most of the stores have a bigger than life bronze sculpture out in front of the store and they are all different. We try to stop when we see them just so we can see the magnificent bronze sculpture. Here at the Sydney store was a bronze of 2 Bull Elk fighting.
Being this is Pony Express Territory, they also had a wonderful bronze of a Pony Express Rider along with the history of the Pony Express.
HI Angela and Ralph, just received your beautiful card. Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers. Mike and I both are going through some pretty rough medical issues but we have so many wonderful friends and family that are praying for us, we have to keep on "keeping on". Janna did a wonderful job teaching you to do a blog. It is WONDERFUL!! Keep it up and I will check it out occasionally to see what you guys are up to. We have a CaringBridge page that kind of keeps everyone up to date on our medical "stuff". Here is the link: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/mikemcfall2/journal . I will send you an invitation so you can join in if you want to. Have fun in Texas this Winter and stop by to see us at North Ranch again when you can.
