MORE WEIGHT LOSS-BEFORE AND AFTER AND GOODBYE DINNER!

On Saturday, May 30, I headed to Weight Watchers. I lost another 1.4 lbs. Bringing my total so far to 42.4 lbs. in 19 weeks. I now weigh 161.4. Just 12 pounds to go until I reach my personal goal of 150. The best part is I don't pay the monthly fee anymore as long as I weigh in once a month and do not go over Weight Watcher's maximum goal weight of 164.

I said goodbye to all the nice folks I have met at WW's. They wished me luck and safe travels. One of the ladies who is Hispanic recited a little travel prayer to me in Spanish and then in English. I was really touched by that.

Here is Sandy, myself and Karen. Sandy does all the paperwork, checks everyone in and records our weights. Karen is our WW Leader and her motivational style and personality really kept me on track.

I will be back to this meeting next winter when we come back to the area and look forward to seeing all these nice folks.

Okay everyone, here I was back in Dec. 2014. This wasn't even my high weight yet because I still had to go through the holidays where I packed on more weight before joining WW a month later on Jan. 17, 2015. Joined at almost 204 lbs. and today weigh 161 but not done yet!

As many of you know, I love to eat, I love food and I even dream about it, it is my favorite past time. But now, this is so much better, my health, my life and how I feel.

As Ralph and I travel, there are always WW meetings around. I want to attend weekly rather than just go every month for my weigh-ins. I still need the weekly meetings to keep me on track.

Saturday evening, we got together with Hoppy, Loy, Richard and Debbie for our last dinner together. I had gotten filet mignons and made homemade crab cakes, along with baked potatoes and homemade cole slaw.

Loy made homemade butter. She did this a few weeks ago when she was subbing at the elementary school. She showed the little kids how to make butter with cream and 2 marbles in a bottle. After a bit of shaking, she had butter. Then she served the butter on crackers to the children.

Debbie made peach cobbler with peaches from her peach tree. We sure did enjoy our nice evening with friends.

Loy and her daughter Wendy surprised me with a goodie bag. It was several sizes of food containers that came with gel lids. You put the gel lids in the freezer and they are ready to go when you pack a picnic lunch. Ralph and I often pack our lunch when we go bike riding or a sight seeing day trip. Our lunch bag fits nicely in our large bicycle basket. This will certainly come in handy.

Just before the fellas put the steaks on the grill, a hard rain came through and dumped another 1/2" of rain.

We were planning to hitch up and leave Sunday, but with this last rain we will have to wait. Remember we are in the middle of the longhorns pasture. Sunday will be dry and sunny so we will give it a day to dry up and hitch up on Monday.

Until next time.............Happy Trails...............

A HORNY BULL, OUR LAST VISIT WITH MOM AND NEW RUNNING SHOES!

It was a nice week this week except for watching the horrific flooding down here in Texas.

We are about 4 hours west of Houston and 70 miles southwest of Wimberley were the majority of the devastation has occurred. We got several inches of rain and just north of us got 17 inches!

I still kept up with my walking and just walked between rain drops.

I did finish washing the ceiling and walls of the RV and Ralph has been tidying up loose ends around the RV getting ready for "hitching up".

Our plans are to leave this Sunday, May 31st but we are closely watching the weather. We are heading due north, eventually making our way to the Great Lakes region by summer. If we have to wait a few days for the weather to get better, we will. That is the beauty of our lifestyle. We have no schedule or responsibilities to be anywhere at anytime.

Hoppy's bull has been quite frisky this week. He has been trying to schmooze all the lady longhorns in his harem. He is also trying to schmooze the neighbors female bovines and doing it right in front of their bull! Hoppy's bull must think he is the "bad ass" here because his horns are way longer then  his competition. The neighbors cattle are a shorthorn breed. All I can say is "boys and their testosterone".

On Wednesday, May 27 we went to see mom. We took her out to lunch, did some errands and then brought her back to Town and Country Manor where we sat outside with her. There is a very nice area to sit at with tables and chairs under a big beautiful shady oak tree.

My iPhone has certainly come in handy. I keep lots of pictures and video's on it that I have taken and also pictures and video's her grandchildren send me. It is nice that she can see her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren!

On the way home, we stopped at New Balance where I bought a much needed pair of running shoes. The bottoms of my soles are smooth with hardly any tread left.

Every time I have visited a New Balance store, I have always found their sales associates very knowledgeable and helpful. After I told him about my issues with "plantar fasciitis" and weight loss, he had me step on their "foot scan pressure mapping analysis" machine. I was amazed to say the least! It showed my pressure points and identified my arch type.

He showed me 2 models that would fit the bill. I tried them both on and they felt very good, but the one pair felt like I was walking on clouds.

Now I can't wait to pound the pavement!

A while back, Hoppy planted sudan hay for the longhorns. It is coming up nicely and will be ready to bale soon.

Until next time.............Happy Trails!

I DID IT! I MADE MY GOAL WITH WEIGHT WATCHERS!

Since my house vacation is over, I have been busy washing walls, cabinets and soon will tackle the ceiling. Even though our rolling ranch house is only 380 sq. ft., this is a bit of a job. I do a little each day and now all that is left is the ceiling.

I have done this many times before, but the last 3 years for what ever reason, I have not done it. I don't know why, I guess my retirement life has become super busy.

Anyway, Ralph and I usually burn a candle every day. The scent is very relaxing and it is cozy and we just love candles.

A few months ago, I just started looking at the walls and the ceiling and they looked dark to me. So I went and got a cotton ball and put alcohol on it and ran it down the wall. Oh my gosh, to my amazement it was as black as coal!

The soot from the candle over the years had darkened the inside of our RV. So I got on the Internet and sure enough I found out how much soot a candle puts out and  how it darkens walls. Come to find out I have since spoken to other RV-er's who have had this happen to them.

So I am sad to say, there will be no more candles for us. At least it was a good work out for me and helped burn some calories.

I have been walking  4 to 5 and sometime 6 days a week, usually 3 to 5 miles and I am still eating properly. It has roughly been 18 weeks and I feel so good. I have not had any episodes of binge eating or even a day that I fell off the wagon. I think once the sugars and bad starchy carbs got flushed from my system, I no longer crave those foods.

On Saturday, May 23rd, I headed to Weight Watchers. I knew I was close on making my goal because of what my home scale said. My scale and the WW scale are very close.

Well I stepped on the scale and holy cow, I dropped 3.6 lbs! I wasn't expecting quite that much and I was in shock. I now weigh 162.8 lbs. for a total lost of 41.0 lbs!

The BMI maximum goal that WW set for me was 164. My last week weighing at this meeting  will be next Saturday, than after that I will go to WW meetings as we travel. They are all over the place and I won't have any trouble finding one.

My personal goal is 150, so I will keep on track and will be there by the end of August if not sooner.

It may be a tiny bit tougher as we travel to find time to walk as much as I have been, but I will make it my priority and will get it done.

Now that I made my goal and since I had been a "Lifetime Member" before, I do not have to do the 6 week maintenance before receiving "LT" status. All I have to do now is to weigh in once a month and not go over 2 lbs. from my maximum goal of 164. It will also not cost me the $10 weekly fee, it is all free now.

But as I am still going to lose another 13 lbs. I will still go every week. I need that meeting and the weigh in and to be held accountable.

I did not have my regular camera with me, so I will bring it next meeting and take a picture of my WW leader Karen and I. She has been a terrific speaker and kept me motivated. In the mean time I will search for a picture of me before I started WW so everyone can see the difference.

We have had lots of rain over the last couple of days. Last night we got 3 1/2 inches and just north of San Antonio areas got 9"! Luckily the hail missed our immediate area. There was lots of flooding from San Antonio up to Austin with lots of damage.

The entire spring has been incredibly wet and Texas is no longer in a drought where they have been for several years. The longhorns are sure enjoying the lush pasture.

I am not sure what kind of birds these are, but they follow the longhorns all over the place. I am guessing as the longhorns walk, they stir up  grasshoppers and other bugs and make easy pickings for the birds.

Until next time...........Happy Trails!

I HAVE BEEN EVICTED, MORE WEIGHT LOSS AND GETTING READY FOR OUR NEXT FRONT YARD!

A couple of days before this past weekend, George and Joanie called me and said they just arrived on dry land. As most of you know, I have been house sitting for the last few weeks while they were on a month long cruise. I have referred to this as "my vacation from a vacation".

I had a blast staying in their home. It was peaceful, quiet and I enjoyed seeing the wildlife. Deer came up in their yard each morning while I sat on their deck sipping my coffee. I got to watch hummingbirds drinking the nectar from the feeders. It was just a relaxing few weeks.

While here I used their treadmill during bad weather but also enjoyed miles and miles of walking up and down the big hills that are prevalent in this part of Texas. I had a great time walking to Cowboy Church and going with Annie and Chuck to the Cowboy Bar for steak night and country music on Wednesday nights.

George and Joanie's original plans when their ship docked in San Diego, was to take their car and drive up the west coast to to some sightseeing for a week, but George's arm and shoulder were acting up so they just decided to drive back to San Antonio. George's needed cortisone shot was over due.

When they called me  to let me know of their change of plans, I was back down at the RV because that day I had a dental appt. and the next day Ralph had his eye check up appt. So I wasn't able to get back up to their home until Friday, May 15th where I headed up to their home to gather all my stuff.

I got to see them when they arrived home. They had a great time and told me of their wonderful adventures traveling to the Hawaiian Islands, Bora Bora, the French Polynesian Islands and crossing the Equator.

Ralph picked me up on the way home from visiting his mom at the nursing home,so he got to see them too.

We arrived at the Herbert Ranch and found Hoppy building the ranches brand at the entrance to the ranch. Their brand is an "H" with a "bar".  I told Hoppy that it looked beautiful and he mumbled under his breath that "this was Loy's idea".

Look at the background and you will see an outhouse (not a real one). This is were UPS and Fed-Ex drop off packages to them. Then these companies leave a note on the ranch gate letting them know of the package.

On Saturday, May 16th I headed off the Weight Watcher's. I stepped on the scale and I lost 2.0 lbs! I now weigh 166.4! Total loss to date is 37.4 lbs. in 17 weeks! I am now 2.6 lbs. away from the maximum WW goal of 164. I will make my goal before we leave and celebrate with my class!

I have  enjoyed my walks this week. I like stopping in front of  ranches to see their livestock. When horses see me, they become very inquisitive and walk up to the fence to greet me.

Isn't he a handsome Brahma bull.

We are getting excited, by June 1st we will be hitched up and heading north. Hopefully all the tornado's and bad weather in the mid west will be long gone! We have had a case of "Hitch Itch" for a while now and look forward to hitting the road!

Ralph has been getting the Dodge ready and has done an oil change, changed the fuel filter, washed and re-oiled the K&N air filter and did a thorough check under the hood.

We headed to the ranch house and found Hoppy taking a break. His son Wes came up a few weeks ago and built this front porch addition on his dad's Cowboy Cave. Hoppy now can come outside and sit a spell. Check out Sissy sitting behind the rocking chair.

It is hard to see, but there is a bar in the left hand corner with old time liquor bottles on display.

Until next time............Happy Trails!

COWBOY CHURCH, 5 MILES FOR A STEAK DINNER AND THE GOLDEN YEARS!

On Sunday, May10th I headed to Cowboy Church, a nice 2 mile walk from my house sitting job. It was a beautiful morning, overcast with a gentle breeze.

When I arrived at church I grabbed a cup of coffee and just "looked" at all the goodies. I don't need pecan pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage gravy, buttermilk biscuits and the sweet table, but down the road when I am at my goal, I will enjoy one of the cowboy church breakfast's.

The cross that stands in front of the church is made out of real horseshoes.

Sunny side or scrambled.

The dessert table. Members take turns bringing sweets.

Several of the folks came up to me and said, I see you walking all over the place. How far do you walk?  Where do you live?  So I tell them my story of full timing in our rolling home, my house sitting job and of course Weight Watchers and my weight loss progress.

I am easy to recognize  when I walk. I have my white sweatband on, carry a large hefty fanny pack around my waist, my head phones on and a bright florescent vest on. So needless to say, everyone can spot me in church against all the cowboy hats, boots and spurs.

As I said before, I love Cowboy church. There are no strangers here and everyone comes up and talks to you. Besides the food, the coffee and the nice western band, the sermon's are  very interesting and keep my very short attention span in check. Pastor Cliff in his cowboy hat, is an excellent speaker and has lots of funny stories to tell and keeps my interest.

This is one section of the seating. Check out the enormous overhead fan. Wow, what a breeze it throws. There is a section of seating on both sides of this center section.

Last time I took pictures for our blog, I showed everyone the beautiful Cowgirl's restroom. Well now here is the the Cowboy's restroom.

If there are any pancakes left over, they put them in zip locks for anyone that wants them. So I picked up a baggie full and will freeze them for Ralph.

By the way, Ralph is doing well. For the next 4 weeks he has to put 3 different kinds of drops in his eye several times a day. He has 20-15 vision now!

On Monday, May 11, I got my walk out of the way early in the morning because the weatherman was calling for thunderstorms all day long. I originally planned to walk to Annie and Chuck's home for a steak dinner this afternoon. They live 5 miles away along and there are several hills to climb.

Although breezy and overcast, the rain never really came, so I decided to walk to Annie and Chuck's for a steak dinner. Wow, with the 4 miles I did this morning and the 5 miles for my steak dinner, I did a total of 9 miles today! The last mile was a bit tough, my feet and knees were hurting a bit and I really slowed down my walk.

When I gained my weight a few years ago, I had gotten Plantar Fasciitis. I have inserts in all my shoes that have helped along with the weight loss.

I had a delicious dinner and wonderful visit with Annie and Chuck. I had a sliver of a piece of Annie's homemade carrot cake which is one of my favorite cakes. I figured I was able to splurge after walking 9 miles today.

On Wednesday, May 13, Ralph and I headed to Dr. Salina's office. I had come down yesterday afternoon to the RV. Last month while I was eating, I felt a crunch of something and thought it was a piece of bone. I just threw it out not paying any mind about it.

Well after lunch I went to brush my teeth and oh, oh, I could feel a piece of tooth gone. Luckily I had no pain or sensitivity so Dr. Salina's just patched it up. If there was pain and sensitivity, I would be looking at a crown! Yikes, that is a lot of money.

I told Ralph that the money we spent on his eyes because it was "elective surgery", that there was no more money left in this years medical fund. Boy, old age and "the golden years" is sure expensive. Of course I do have one of those "older models" and sometimes he just needs to get "refurbished" every few years.

On Thursday, May 14 we headed to Dr. Medina's office for Ralph's one week follow up check up. Dr. Median gave Ralph some eye test and he has 20-15 vision! Hot Dog! Now he has no excuses for missing any shooting targets.

Until next time............Happy Trails!

MORE WEIGHT LOSS, SNAKES MAKING WHOOPIE!

On Sat. May 9th I got up extra early and got my 4-mile walk out of the way before heading to WW.

On my way back to the ranch, I got a treat. I saw 2 Rat Snakes getting cozy with each other.

What a beautiful front yard we have. We love being surrounded by the longhorns.

While I was taking the picture of the longhorns, this female longhorn snuck up behind me. She followed me a bit wanting to be petted.

Well after my shower, I packed up my little Toyota truck, said goodbye to Ralph and headed to WW.

I knew it was going to be a good weigh in and sure enough it was! I lost 2.6 and now weigh 168.4. In 16 weeks I have lost 35.4 lbs! I received my 16 week charm and added it to my key ring. I have two other WW charms too, one charm was for when I made my 5% goal and the second charm is when I made my 10% goal weight.

A funny thing happened when I went to log in my progress on my WW iPhone App. When you log in your weight, a message will come up saying things like congratulations, you are doing a good job, keep up with what you are doing and etc., etc.

Well twice now I have  gotten messages like this one: "Your losing weight faster than is recommended. Although it is normal to lose over 2 lbs. in 1 week, if you lose more than an average of 2 lbs. per week over a 4 week period, this could pose health risks such as heart irregularities, anemia or loss of muscle mass. Please show your weight loss and talk to your doctor or WW leader".

I am eating healthy, properly and feel fine. I am just exercising! I am doing a lot of exercising because I want to try to make my maximum goal that WW has set for me before we hitch up. I want to receive my "Life Time Membership" and celebrate that victory with my WW leader Karen and the class. So I will need to lose 4.4 lbs. in 3 weeks because my last weigh in here will be Sat. May 30th.

I will have no trouble finding a WW meeting as we travel. They are all over the place. I still have another 12 to 15 pounds to lose for my personal goal and that will take me close to 3 months.

One thing about WW is that they are all over and it is no problem finding a WW meeting as we travel.

On the way up the road I did some errands before arriving at my house sitting vacation job. After putting groceries away, I did laundry and relaxed the rest of the day.

Until next time................Happy Trails!

BURNING THE CALORIES, MY NEW DO AND RALPH'S EYE SURGERY!

This past week I did well with my eating and working out. I had a couple of days where I walked several miles. In the evening during  TV commercials I would jump up and I took turns either doing lunges, planks, jogged in place or step aerobics. I know it will be a good weigh in this week!

On Tuesday, May 5th, I headed to Bandera for my hair cut. While I was at the Cowboy Bar last week, there was this nice lady who was running the little gift shop there. I loved her hair cut and she gave me the name of her hair salon and stylists.

Well I was very happy with my cut. It will go good with my weight loss!

As I promised in my last blog, here are better pictures of some of the western signs and the Bandera Courthouse.

Here is a little history of  Bandera.

Signs with different western designs line both sides of Main St. in Bandera.

The beautiful Bandera Courthouse was built in 1890. The style is called Renaissance Revival. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 31, 1979.

On Thursday, May 7th, we headed to the Eye Surgery Center in San Antonio. Ralph was having a Toric Lense put in.

Dr.Gregory Parkhurst and his staff were great. He is recognized  nationally as an expert and leader in Lasik vision correction. He has helped pioneer new trends in refractive surgery worldwide.

Ralph had his left eye done in February and decided to have the other one done rather than waiting until we came back next winter to the area.

As you can see, he has his fashionable bonnet on and some art work pointing  to the eye that is to be done.

Here he is all hooked up to a heart and BP monitor. The nurse is putting in the IV for the "happy juice" that will put him in "La La Land", but still allow him to follow their instructions during the proceedure.

When they wheeled him back, I went to the waiting room to relax and grab a cup  of coffee. I was just about done my cup when Curtis said "Come on back, he is all done". Darn, I didn't even get to read but the first page of a healthy eating magazine that I was looking at!

We soon were in the truck heading home and the best part was it was just before rush hour!

The next day, on Friday, May 8th we headed to Dr. Parkhurst office for the next day follow up.

Ralph's Optometrist of 4 years, Dr. Medina came to see Ralph. He overseas and manages LASIK and refractive surgery clinical care provided at the Parkhurst-Nuvision Center.

There happened to be a film crew there doing a segment on eye surgery. When they found out they had a shooting competitor there, they jumped at the chance to interview "Lefty Rhodes".

They asked Ralph if he would be interested in sharing his story and soon hooked Ralph up with all the wires.

It turned out to be a very nice interview between Dr. Medina and Lefty Rhodes. I was very impressed that Ralph did so well while in the "hot seat".

Ralph just happened to have his belt buckles with him that he has won over the years because Dr. Parkhurst had wanted to see them. Ralph's latest "prized" buckle came from the "Comancheria Days" Annual Match that was held on the historical Adolf Stieler Ranch last month. He proudly showed it off.

Ralph also has been making leather knife sheaths for several of Dr. Medina's handmade flint knives over the last couple of months. Today he brought Dr. Medina the last one and this one had Dr. Medina's initials carved into the sheath.

Ralph usually wears a western shirt and wears his cowboy hat when he goes to his Dr. appointments. This day however he did not. It would have added a nice touch interviewing a cowboy talking about his "Cowboy Action Shooting" competition.

I am on the outside of the glass looking in the interview room.

                                                                    The Monitor

As the film is rolling, Dr. Medina is holding Ralph's latest trophy buckle. Ralph explained how his eye sight was before the surgery and how it is now.

"Thanks to Dr. Medina and Dr. Parkhurst, I can see the targets now and I won this great belt buckle!"

Dr. Medina shows off his monogrammed flint knife sheath with his initials. The knife handle is made out of antler.

Dr. Gregory Parkhurst, Ralph and Dr. Arthur Medina

When Ralph had his first eye surgery this past February, I asked Dr. Parkhurst if the lense he was putting in could make me look 30 lbs. lighter. He said lenses have not come that far yet.  So I knew Weight Watcher's was the only way for me.

One of the Assistants that saw me today, came up and said, "Oh my gosh, how much weight have you lost?" That made me feel good!

As of the last weigh in, I have lost 32.8 lbs. so far! Tomorrow is WW weigh in!

Until next time..................Happy Trails!........................

FUN WITH FRIEND'S AT THE COWBOY BAR AND MORE WEIGHT LOSS!

On Wednesday, April 29th, Annie and Chuck came to pick me up and we headed over to Bandera. Bandera is officially known as the Cowboy Capital of the World. There is lots of western history here and the town keeps the cowboy way of life alive.

I spotted these chickens walking around the Courthouse grounds. Funny thing is that there is a bar just down from the courthouse called the Chicken Coop. Maybe they come from there?

Every Wednesday night, there is a big gathering of folks, locals and tourist who enjoy "Steak Night" along with an evening of entertainment with wonderful live country music at The 11th Street Cowboy Bar.

There is a very nice stage for the band to play. The dance floor is sprinkled with shavings so cowboy boots can slide along with the tune of a Cowboy Waltz or the Texas Two Step. Here the dance floor isn't busy right now because people are grilling the meat they brought for supper.

You enter on the other side of this building from the street and walk through to the open dance floor and open bar area.

There is a gal that checks your cooler to make sure no one is smuggling in beer. Drinks are cheap here. You can bring in outside wine and liquor because the Cowboy Bar does not sell wine and spirits, but since they sell beer, you can't bring beer in.

This little building is where pay your $6 and receive your plate and sides. You get a roll, a huge baked potato with sour cream and butter and a trip to the salad bar.

There are several grills like these through out the cooking area. Folks bring everything from sausage links, meat, fish, shrimp, chicken and kabobs.

There is no cover charge, so everyone throws money into a donation jar that is stitting on stage for the band. Ralph and I try to come here several times over the winter. It is a lot of fun. What is nice too is that it is an older crowd and a lot of the good ol' traditional country music is played.

There are no strangers here either. Everyone dances with everyone. Just a nice bunch of country folks.

Oops! Another sideways picture. I haven't had this happen in a long time, so just go ahead and tilt your head a bit.

This long haired cowboy is a local celebrity in these parts. His name is James "Hoot" Gibson. He is as they say "a True Texas American Original". He is a life long working cowboy,  has competed in rodeo's much of his life, trained and shod horses and is a cowboy poet.

He and his business partner Mary Allyce Schenk published a book called "Riders on the Storm". It was about their 2,500 mile horseback ride from Bandera, TX. to Calgary, Alberta, Canada for the Calgary Stampede back in 2004.

They left Bandera on January 20th, 2004 and 5 months and 19 days later, they rode into the Calgary Stampede Headquarters on July 8, 2004, an international media spotlight and into the arms of all of Canada. They were hero's to the Canadians.

They were made honorary Calgarians by the Mayor of Calgary and interviewed by worldwide media from Canada to Taiwan and back.

Years ago, I bought a copy of their book that they both signed. I loved the book, it was exciting and kept me on the edge of my seat as I was reading it. It was so well written, that I actually felt like I was riding with them through the snow, cold, rain and their mishaps.

Hoot often cooks over a open fire in cast iron cookware at his ranch and has folks over. He also can be seen often in town strumming his guitar sitting on a bale of hay and entertaining the tourist along with other cowboy singers. He will also spout out several cowboy poems to the delight of the crowd.

Next time, I will get a picture of the rest of the stage and band. Here is my friend Annie. She can play the tambourine and the band will often call her on stage to play along. She does a real good job and she has the personality and loves to entertain the crowd.

Later in the night, I walked up to the Pico convenience store to get coffee. The town celebrates its western heritage as you can see here. There are many metal art signs along Main St. that hang on lamp post. It was just too dark to take pictures of those, so I will do that next time in the daylight.

You will come across Marker's that give a history of the town and surrounding area. The Marker on the right, explained the story of Bandera County Deputy Sheriff Capt. Jack Phillips. He set out alone on Dec. 29, 1876 on an official visit to Sabinal Canon. Indians attacked him at Seco Canyon Pass, 22 miles south west of Bandera. Phillips raced for the nearest settlement. When his horse was shot from under him, he ran for half a mile before the Indians killed him.

A mail carrier and a couple found his body later that day on their way to the county seat to be married.

Ironically, the Indians had been trailed for many miles by the Texas Rangers who had turned back in exhaustion just before Phillips was waylaid.

The Marker on the left is The Old Texas Ranger Trail. It was a winding, 100 mile trail from San Antonio to Kerrville. There were many hostile Indian attacks in this region. It was regularly scouted by Texas Rangers who helped promote early white settlement by strengthening frontier defense. There were many attacks by the Comanches against settlers and Texas Rangers in this area.

The white marker is of The Great Western Trail also known as the Dodge City Trail and The Old Texas Trail. The trail began in Bandera and passed through Abilene, TX. to Dodge City, Kansas, though Nebraska and onto Belle Fourche, South Dakota. It roughly paralleled the Chisholm Trail. The Great Western Trail saw 10 to 12 million long horn cattle and horses that were driven on this trail. The first herd blazed the trail in 1874 and the last herd made the trip in 1894.

In the center of town are public restrooms and they have painted murals on the front of the building. Maybe next time I will take better pictures during the daylight.

On Saturday, May 1st, I headed down to my Weight Watcher's meeting about 45 min. from my house sitting vacation.

I lost 2.2 lbs! I now have lost 32.8 lbs! I now weigh 171.0 and it is official, I way less than Ralph! I am hoping to make the maximum goal WW has set for me which is 164 by the time we leave the Herbert Ranch. My personal goal as I said last week is 150 and I will get there by August.

We will hopefully be "hitching up" on or around June 1st. This will give me 4 more weigh ins. I need to lose another 7 lbs. It will be close and that is a lot to lose in 4 weeks.

I sure would love to make my goal here at this meeting location. My WW leader Karen is awesome and has inspired me with her upbeat personality, experience and confidence that she extends to us. She had lost 50 lbs. several years ago and is so lean and fit looking.

I arrived at our rolling home and Ralph and Hoppy went to a shooting competition. Ralph did well with only a few misses. It was nice to spend time with him. We enjoyed a relaxing evening around the campfire.

On Sunday, May 3rd I did a 5 mile walk in the morning. As I said in earlier posts, this area is some what rural but you do come up on a clump of houses here and there where everyone has pit bull's. Many run lose and many run in packs.

When I walk or ride my bike, my police grade pepper spray is with in quick reach. When I walk, I keep it in my hand with my finger on the trigger.

I passed this one house that is for a better lack of a word is a dump and I see pit bulls there and female pit bull's with several liters.

Well a  large white male pit bull came at me at a dead run, across the road and barking, growling, teeth showing and the hair along his back sticking straight up. He never even slowed up as I stood my ground and let him get within 10 feet of me before I let him have it with the spray. I nailed him good. He peeled off in a circle and started planting his face in the dirt trying to rub the spray off. He took his paws and kept rubbing his eyes.

Well he came at me again and I nailed him again between the eyes only this time with a long full one second spray. He took off for his yard and I watched him for a couple of minutes as he tried his best to rub the mace off. He couldn't even open his eyes. His entire face was covered with the red pepper spray.

It was an exhilarating experience and I loved it. I have never had fear dealing with inmates and dirt bags while with the Sheriff's Dept. and this was no different. I have no tolerance for bullies, whether they are dogs or thugs.

When he first charged me, I yelled in a loud deep voice at him a couple of times. I never saw anyone but I am sure the people were home because there were several cars in the yard and most of the people around here don't work and are supported by the State Of Texas. It amazes me that people have dogs like this and they allow them to run free and off their property.

I have been charged by several dogs in my life and at those times I did not have any spray. However I became the Alpha Dog and actually charged at them only to have them turn tails. Although this particular dog I doubt would have turned. He was on a mission to do damage. If I didn't have spray, yes he would have torn into my leg. However I know me and I would have been very capable of choking him to death. I have no tolerance for this!

That afternoon I headed back to my vacation home. So until next time........Happy Trails!!!
